Day 03 Tuesday, September 5, 2023 Paris - The Marais District walking tour
Today enjoy a delicious introduction to fresh Parisian cuisine with a special 'Flavors of Paris' walking tour. You are off to The Marais district of Paris.
The Marais district escaped much of the redevelopment of Paris in the 1800s, and today it has the most pre-revolutionary buildings and houses left in-tact. Your tour will take you through the quiet and unknown historical sector of the Marais with tastings. You will begin at a beautiful belle epoque pastry shop for a pastry and coffee. From there you will wander over to the Jewish district, passing some of the most impressive private mansions of the 15th century and the walk through the oldest and most beautiful square in Paris, Place des Vosges.
Stop 1) Elegant, historic tea room for coffee and croissants.
Stop 2) Charming, tranquil café, tucked away in the corner of Place des Vosges, (the oldest and most beautiful square in Paris.)
Stop 3) Family-run chocolate shop in the heart of the Jewish district for a tasting of kosher chocolate.

Bonjour,
Since my first visit to Paris almost 40 years ago (Wow!) I have been thinking of what it is about this extraordinary city that makes it such a pleasure and a joy to experience. What transforms a Paris visit into a Paris experience? In 2014 as our Normandy Painting tour wrapped up I decided to stop in Paris for the first of two research trips during which I hoped to answer this question. And answer it I did!
Paris is best experienced from the footpaths and pedestrian bridges that crisscross the city! The city’s magnificent architecture was created to be seen from the street. City markets, parks, and galleries are all only steps and stops along – as John Baxter writes - one of the most beautiful walks in the world. So, in September 2023 please join me as we experience Paris by foot, strolling from our Montparnasse hotel through the historic streets of Paris. And please note, for those who prefer a bit less strolling, all participants will be provided with access to the Paris Metro – a quick and easy way to reach each of our special destinations.

The Most Beautiful Walk in The World John Baxter
|
Paris Tales Helen Constantine
Constantine has selected and translated 22 short stories set in Paris that reflect the character of particular areas, including works from Guy de Maupassant, Emile Zola, Michel Butor, Georges Perec and Andree Chedid. All stories have a Parisian setting, but take place in different eras, and are as diverse as the artists who penned them.
|
Paris to The Moon Adam Gopnik
In this collection of 23 essays and journal entries, many of which were originally published in the New Yorker, Gopnik chronicles the time he spent in Paris between 1995 and 2000. Although his subjects are broad – global capitalism, American economic hegemony, France’s declining role in the world – he approaches each one with the tiny, personal details of his life as a married expatriate with a small child.
|
A Moveable Feast Ernest Hemingway
This set of memoirs by Ernest Hemingway recalls his years in Paris as part of the American expatriate circle of writers in the 1920s. It includes personal accounts, observations and stories of his experiences as a young writer, with specific addresses of cafés, bars and hotels – some of which can be found in modern-day Paris.
