 Painting
Southern India
with
Anne-Laure Jacquart January 5-23, 2020

Highlights: Your watercolour workshop with Anne-Laure begins set amid the bougainvillea and cobblestones of Pondicherry's French Quarter, a colonial dream on the coastal edge of India's southern-most state, Tamil Nadu. From here travel to the Thousand Pillar Hall deep in the breathtaking maze of Sri Meenakshi Mandir, the spiritual heart of the ancient temple city of Madurai. Then cross the Western Ghats, a mountain range of mist-settled valleys and high tea plantations leaving one India for another. Kerala is home to India's largest Christian population and the site of Fort Cochin, once an important outpost in the early history of the spice trade. The Portuguese and Dutch marked this point on the Malabar Coast with their religions and architectures, while vibrant Jewish and Muslim communities grew shoulder to shoulder. The history of India comes alive in these streets.  Finally travel to the home of India's Bollywood dream. Your watercolour workshop ends in Mumbai, a thriving cosmopolitan city stretching out into the Arabian Sea.

Journal page from Painting N. India 2017 Anne-Laure

 Greetings from Anne-Laure

“This is an invitation to loosen up and express yourself painterly in a brand new way!! What would you think about improving your watercolor technique while having more and more fun with it?!! The trip will be for you an opportunity to grow as an artist while creating a wonderful watercolor travel journal full of evocative spontaneous sketches and colorful paintings, a perfect record for this unforgettable India adventure!

During the workshop sessions, I will share with you my tips and techniques to catch a subject or scene in a quick impromptu way, demonstrating them as I go through warm up exploratory studies, watercolour sketches and more refined demos. We will work on capturing their essence through light, colors, edges and pigment playing.
Here are a few techniques you will work on during the workshop : spontaneous brushwork, negative painting, alternating painting on dry paper and wet in wet,  simplifying values, washes and pigment consistency, calligraphic marks and strokes, splatters, silhouettes shapes, color harmony, and more ! :)
You will learn to apply all of these techniques to the diversity of subjects that makes a great travel journal : architecture and street scenes, travel atmosphere, landscapes but also food, plants, people, objects, and details of all kind.

I will be really excited to have you in the group and to spend these unforgettable moments or travelling and painting with you! Art, cheerfulness, friendship and experiencing the world…. What else?!! :)
Looking forward to meeting you, creative bag across the shoulder, brush in hand and inspiration to the full!”
